10 Things You May
Not Know About Us:
- We started in the 1940s and have worked at the heart of the community ever since.
- We are a charity in need of funds from local sources, as well as funding from local companies and other organisations.
- We give generalist advice on everything from benefits, employment issues and consumer rights to housing, immigration and debt advice. Our advisers are trained to high professional standards and are a mixture of paid and voluntary staff.
- We give free, independent, impartial and confidential advice to the people of Brent, and the demand for our service is great.
- We have one outlet in Brent located in Willesden High Road.
- We operate a Call Centre where problems can be resolved or appointments can be made to see our advisers. Appointments can also be made to see our solicitors who offer free legal advice.
- Our main areas of enquiry are:
- Debt
- Benefits
- Housing
- Employment
- Immigration
- We are mostly staffed by volunteers and we are always looking for new people to join the team. As well as people who want to train as advisers, we also need people who can offer IT skills, clerical back-up and language skills relevant to local needs. We need volunteers from all sections of our community, regardless of age, race, sexuality, disability or educational background.
- We work with local communities to identify trends in the types of problems that people are experiencing. This means that we can campaign for social policy changes to be made locally and nationally.
- We are supported by Citizens Advice, a national organisation that sets standards for advice-giving that we must meet and which provides a unique information system, updated monthly, upon which all CAB advice is based.
